EFT for Pain Relief

This page picks up where we left off on the 5 Steps of EFT page. Now that you are familiar with The 5 Steps, we will expand on example B regarding physical pain to provide you with more examples and broader application.

If you need more practice please review The EFT 5 Steps Page

Self-help for Physical Pain

Recall from the 5 Steps page that you started tapping in example B for physical pain with this setup phrase:

“Even though my knee is constantly throbbing, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

Next, you tapped all the remaining points with the reminder phrase:

“My knee is constantly throbbing.”

If, at this point your pain was not 0 or 1 on the intensity scale, you may have gone on to describe more details such as:

“Even though my knee feels like (it's on fire) (it's frozen) (it will collapse at any moment etc.), I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

One or two rounds like this may be all you need to relieve physical pain with EFT. However, if you find after tapping this way that you still have some remaining pain you may want to try customizing an even more descriptive setup statement by filling in the blank with your own words.

EFT Tap Map

“Even though my knee feels like___________(it’s angry and inflamed, and it keeps me from going places and doing things), I still deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

“Even though my knee feels like___________(it’s frozen solid like an iceberg, and it’s stuck-sort of like the rest of my life), I still deeply and completely love and accept myself. anyway,”

“Even though my knee feels like___________(it will collapse at any moment because it’s not strong enough to hold me up and I can’t trust it to hold me up), I still deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

Pay close attention to the spontaneous language you use to describe to yourself how the pain feels and how it affects your life. Look for any hidden benefits to having or keeping physical pain. Does it help you in some way? Look for conflict. (If I get rid of this pain, then I’ll have to__________.) Look for areas in your life where you’re having trouble adapting to someone or something new or different. Does this pain remind you of another time in your life? If so, when was it and what was going on in your life at the time? EFT will help you excavate these layers and release them along with the pain.

Check the intensity of the pain again. If it is not at 0 or 1, refine the focus of your EFT setup statement still further. Building on the 3 examples above, notice how we can expand on them.

“Even though my knee pain keeps me from doing things I love to do, it also gives me an excuse to avoid things I don’t want to do, but I deeply and completely love and accept myself even though I have this conflict.”

“Even though my life feels stuck and frozen like my knee, and what I really want to do with my life is______________, but I can’t because _____________, and my knee keeps me from doing anything anyway, but I deeply and completely love and forgive myself for having this conflict.”

“Even though I can’t trust my knee to hold me up and I’m afraid my body is wearing out and I’m getting old, (afraid I won’t be able to play soccer or hike anymore), I still deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

Remember, EFT creates a powerful connection between your unique thoughts, feelings and energy and will address your pain in an equally unique way. So, make sure the setup statements you say fully express how you think and feel.

Please Note:
Not every physical pain has an emotional component. For example, if on your way to work you stepped off the curb and twisted your knee, the only emotion attached to it may be the OUCH! #@%&*#! you felt at the time. Or, you may have said to yourself, “Why wasn’t I watching where I was stepping?” With this statement you could do a simple setup like this:

“Even though I wasn’t watching where I was stepping and I feel silly for hurting myself, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”
